Sunrise Church in Wrightwood

Sunday, May 22nd, we played up the mountain in Wrightwood for Sunrise Church's game day. After church, they gathered for a meal and then played several types of games, before having Southland come up and play.

As you can see, they had a bounce house, board games and card games set up at different tables.

Relay for Life 2011

Saturday, Relay for Life was held at Summit High School in Fontana. Southland once again had the pleasure of being able to donate their time, music and all proceeds to this wonderful fundraising charity for cancer research. Wayne's mother had cancer, so this is especially dear to his heart.

The stage that also shows the name, date and location. And in true Fontana style, the wind picked up shortly before Southland played. But of course, all the locals are quite used to the winds.

While Southland played, the walkers still walked to raise money for cancer research,

People tossed balls in the field near their tents, while others rested inside them,

Mothers played with their babies and

kids ran around burning off lots of energy, while others sat nearby cheering on the walkers/runners.

And while all this was happening, they were being entertained by Southland's music by either sitting in the audience or listening to them via the speakers.

Bill Gaither Homecoming Tour

On Saturday, Southland had the opportunity to attend the Gaither Homecoming Tour together and it was a real treat for not only us, but for our wives as well. Bill Gaither really knows how to put on a show!

Not only did we get to see the concert, we were able to see it in style inside the Citizen Business Bank's suite. It truly was a wonderful night!

Desert Springs Harvest Festival

On October 30th, Southland played at Desert Springs Church in Hesperia, CA for their Harvest Festival. It was originally going to be held in their parking lot, but due to the weather, they had to bring it indoors. There was a really good turn out from the community, so although it was a bit crowded, fun was had by all.

This little Buzz Lightyear enjoyed the music and just couldn't help but dance!

Besides lots of fun games to play with candy to receive, there was also lots of yummy free food! From cotton candy, popcorn, to hot dogs and nachos. Here is the pastor's lovely wife, Nancy, helping to hand out the hot dogs and nachos.

The games were held in the front of the building and then everyone headed to the back to enjoy the sound of Southland while also enjoying their food. As you can see by these two cute Cinderella's, there was also face painting!

And it wouldn't be a party without clowns who make balloon animals!

Valle Vista Baptist Church

Southland played down in Hemet, CA at Valle Vista Baptist Church to help celebrate the 28th anniversary of Pastor Ken Landes. For those who don't know, Kenneth is Wayne's older brother! He and Wayne learned how to play guitar together and even sang together at school, Church and family functions. This particular week, Mike Lundy was unable to play with the group, so Ken filled in for him. It was a great opportunity for his church to see him play in a band and he also helped fill a need in Southland.

Orange County Fair 2010

Thank you to everyone who came out to the OC Fair to support and encourage us! As always, we had a great time playing God's music for you, meeting new fans and reconnecting with some that we haven't seen in some time.

For the 3rd year in a row, we were invited to perform at the Orange County Fair. This year we played on the Meadows Stage, which gave our fans a chance to sit down at umbrella covered tables and enjoy some yummy fair food, while being entertained by Southland.

Soldiers For Jesus M.C.

Saturday, July 24, 2010 Southland played a fundraiser for Soldiers For Jesus Motorcycle Club. It was held in the parking lot of Calvary Chapel of Running Springs.

We saw a lot of these vests and a bunch of black and yellow. Can you guess their club's colors?
They served hot dogs and chips for lunch, while the bikers and their families relaxed under these canopy's listening to our music.

Kevin had family obligations and couldn't play with us, so our dear friend and past drummer filled in for him. Thank you Randall. As always, it is a pleasure playing with you and seeing your beautiful family.

25th Anniversary Reunion Concert

On May 1, 2010 Southland celebrated our 25th Anniversary by having a concert. In addition to us playing, we also invited the Range Riders and The Weatherfords to join us.

Nakomis Hanna did an Indian presentation/signing to the Lord's Prayer.

In between the Range Riders and The Weatherfords performing, we pulled raffle tickets to win either our new t-shirts or CD's.

Next, from Oklahoma, we had The Weatherfords. We were sure glad they could be here.

This same logo seen here on the screen, is also what is on the front of our new t-shirts.

And here is the back, which lists members (Past & Current) that have played with Southland through out the years.

After another raffle drawing and a quick intermission, it was time for us to play. We were lucky enough to have some original members come back to play with us, as well as various other guys from years past.

Wayne Landes, is the only member to have played consecutively with us for the entire 25 years!

The one and only SPIKE! Jeff Olson (past member) came back to play drums with us. He is the only one of us that has gone on to play with such artists as David Beniot, Peter Tork of the Monkees, traveled all over Europe and other exciting adventures. He has also played drums on our last 3 CD's.

A real touching moment was when we played a video of the original band performing. It was fun to see how some of the guys have changed and to see those who have gone home to be with the Lord. I love how all the guys are looking up at the screen here.

Then, our own Wayne Landes joined in singing "Jesus Christ is Lord" with HIMSELF!

For the finally, we had the Range Riders and The Weatherfords join us on stage to sing "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder"

Chatsworth Four Square Church

Southland played at Chatsworth Four Square Church last night. This is a church we have been playing at for over 20 years, so it always feels like home when we go there. Sunday, March 7th, Southland played at 1st Baptist Church of Rialto. This has been a church that supported Southland through the years and it was a joy to play their once again.

Glen Avon Community Church

After taking a small break for the holidays, we are back performing in various local churches. Please check out our website www.southlandmusicministries.com for future dates. Also, we will be celebrating Southland's 25th Anniversary this year. We are hoping to do something big in April.

This morning, we played at one of our beloved church's, Glen Avon Community Church. We always appreciate their hospitality and the fact that they just love having Southland come and worship with them.

Fountain of Living Waters

This morning we played at Fountain of Living Waters church in Phelen. They are currently meeting at the Phelen Middle School.

Mike was unable to play today, so Daniel filled in for him. Daniel used to be a guitar student of Wayne's about 6 years ago and now he is playing in a few Praise & Worship bands for his church and school. Thank you Daniel for being there for Southland. You were great!

He and his family attend this church, so he was able to fill in and do our sound this morning. We miss having him as our full time sound man, but are looking forward to having him fill in for us again in the future. Thanks for your great and hard work Joel!

Today was "Family Day", so instead of the the kids going into their own classes, they were able to stay in for the concert. Because they are kids after all and their attention span is limited (even with great music), they had a couple of tables set up in the corner for them to draw and color. We even saw a few of them dancing in the back!

Afterwards, the church held their Harvest Festival. There was this very popular bouncer/slide out in the parking lot. Free food was served, games were played and each child went home with tons of candy.

Yucca Valley

Southland played in Yucca Valley for two weekends in a row. The first weekend New Beginnings Community Church asked five groups/artists to come play in the Sears parking lot as a way to introduce this new church to the community. It was pretty much an all day event (11am to 5pm). Not only did they have the bands, there were also activities for the kids.

The following weekend, First Southern Baptist Church of Yucca Valley, had their Harvest Festival at their church property. Here Southland performed on a trailer with an awesome backdrop of the desert and mountain. I love how you can see a cross just behind Wayne's shoulder. The church also had free hot dogs, beans, chips, drink, ice slushies and ice cream, along with lots of fun games and crafts for the kids. Pastor Stephen Jones, his family and congregation were a welcoming & fun group of people. Thank you for having us.

Cowboy Church - August 2009

In August we led worship for Norco's Cowboy Church. This is always a fun service, because we are outdoors not only enjoying worshiping our Savior, but also enjoying what He has made. We meet just behind the grandstands in the VIP tent, so the horses and bulls are always eating right next to where we play, which is lots of fun.

Orange County Fair 2009

We were very excited to go back to the Orange County Fair for the second year in a row. This time we were moved up to the Main Stage, played on Saturday vs. Friday and performed at 11:15am.

Wayne's father-n-law did a wonderful job at selling our CD's for us while we were on stage. Thank you.

We love the OC Fair, because it is smaller than the LA Fair, and therefore more intimate. Also, it is a great fair for our family and friends to come out and support us at.

Thank you OC Fair for having us back! We hope to play for you again next year.

Hemet Valley Baptist Church - July 4, 2009

Wayne's previous pastor asked Southland to come down to his current church in Hemet to play at their 4th of July celebration. The church started out the day by playing softball on their baseball field, followed by a BBQ and Southland's music. There was lots to do for all ages. Games, Face Painting, Clowns, Bounce Houses, etc., as well as a firework show at night.

Here is Southland playing the first set of the day. It was very hot, so we were thankful for shade the pop up's provided.

A couple of Hemet locals came out to support Southland, even though they don't attend this particular church. Thank you!

Although you can't see it in this picture, you can see the wonderful shade that the huge tent provided. The people sitting back enjoying our music really appreciated this.

Two of our regular band mates were out of town, so we asked our old bass player, Rex, to come fill in for Roy and the drummer, Kent, filled in for Kevin. He is a professional drummer that fills in for various drummers and he was pure joy to work with.

We had a fabulous time celebrating our country's freedom down in Hemet!

Relay for Life - March 2009

Relay For Life is a fundraiser for cancer research. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

This is something very important to all the members of Southland, as each of us knows someone who has been affected by cancer. Because of this, we chose to take time to volunteer to perform for the walkers/runners trying to raise money.

Northwinds Church Movie Night (Summer 2008)

Northwind Church held a movie night last Summer, as a way to introduce themselves to their community and hopefully get new members. They started off the evening with Southland playing and teaching the crowd how to line dance. There were also free bottles of water and popcorn. Lots of people in the neighborhood came out to enjoy the music, to play in the park, visit with their neighbors and watch Lion King on this cool blow up screen.

Here we have Roy (Bass), Wayne (Vocal/Guitar), Jeff Olsen (Drums) and Mike Lundy (Rhythm Guitar). Jeff first played in Southland when he was just 16 years old. He has since become a professional drummer having played with Jazz Keyboardist, David Benoit, and Monkey's Peter Tork. He is a great friend and we are very fortunate to have him fill in for us when he can.

After we played and then tore down our equipment, we also settled in to watch the movie.

San Diego Fair's Gospel Fest 2008

In my post below, I promised you a post about performing at the San Diego Fair's Gospel Fest.
To be eligible to play for the SD Fair Gospel Fest, we first had to complete an application and then go down to the House of Blues for an audition. A couple of weeks later we found out that they wanted us (out of a few hundred), our time and stage. We played at 11:00am and then had the rest of the day to enjoy the fair with our families.

Orange County Fair 2008

The Summer of 2008 allowed Southland to play somewhere new and that was at our local fairs. We first played down at San Diego Fair's Gospel Fest (look for a post on that soon) and then at the Orange County Fair. Here we performed on an absolutely terrific stage in the Plaza Arts area. Lots of tables for people to sit down and eat while enjoying our music.

Here is a small view of how the tables were set up, along with a few of our fabulous fans. Mrs. Dee Dee C. (orange top) has been faithfully following Southland since she was only 12 years old! This day she brought along her four beautiful children. It is wonderful to see generations enjoying the music we put out.
